Default Internet Explorer 7 vs Firefox 2.0

There's a great article I would like to direct your attention to at www.bit-tech.net that's quite a good read (for all you browser junkies out there). As the title says, it's a comparison of IE 7 vs. Firefox 2.0 and is very well put together with comparisons on features (yes IE 7 will now have tabs), searches, security, extras and more (it's missing a few key things but a good overall look).

I'll post the last paragraph giving their thoughts as I found it a good read:
Quote:
Clearly, IE7 is a massive upgrade - and now there's really nothing that Firefox does that IE doesn't, in terms of functionality. What Firefox does have is a large library of extensions for those who like to customise their browser, as well as the general pro-security feature of open source vs. closed source.

It pains me to say it, but my initial impression is that for a lot of people, there's no real reason to head to Firefox. Internet Explorer is such a large improvement over version 6 that it's hard to imagine what would get you to bother downloading it, unless you're a Mozilla fanboy or an extensions addict.

Regardless of your position on the FF v IE debate, it's clearly good that average joes that haven't even heard of Firefox are going to end up with a better (and safer) browsing experience in Vista.

If IE7 is such a massive improvement, it's hard to see what about the new Firefox really justifies the moniker '2.0'. It really seems like more of a 1.6 - there's not a lot of difference here. The browser wars just got a lot more interesting...

And just one comment of note here... the biggest drawback I can still see with IE 7 (and one of the reasons I won't be changing) is the CSS that is so poorly managed. I can't tell you how many websites I tried to visit on IE7, including this one, that doesn't display it properly. Granted it's still in beta but it's a huge issue.

One of my class mates for Electronics has Vista on his laptop with IE 7... We looked into the source code and its basicly the open source version of Fire Fox... Ya know, the really really old version of it.

Interesting. I use IE because i dont really care about customizing my browser, but i do have FireFox on here as well. I like firefox better when i am working with macs, otherwise i just stick to IE.

I've grown used to FF now, and I've used the FF2.0 beta somewhat, and it seemed to have fixed most of the memory leaks current FF comes with.

Used Vista somewhat too, and played with IE7 on it. Not as customizable as FF, but a major improvement over IE6.

I think speaking for "more security" with IE7 is bit early as the new version isn't in wide usage yet, so hacks'n'cracks haven't bothered to play with it that seriously. The holes and flaws will be found, that is obvious, FF has security holes, as does Opera. The question is, will the fixes for IE7 we available as fast as they are for FF and other open source stuff, and will the fixes be available at all?

Firefox will always be more secure than IE no matter how many security features either has for the simple reason that less people are using it so almost no viruses are directed towards it. That... and the fact that people can continually make more and more security extentions for it.
